Divination Journey
This (divination) journey was done for a woman (Emma) who had growing concerns for her son’s well-being
and is shared with her permission.
...Before describing the journey I want to explain a few things that may help it make more
sense. The Lower World (where things are often divined) is reached through a portal. When
you reach the Lower World you typically begin searching for the spirit guide who will answer
your question. If you meet a potential guide you ask if they are there to answer the question. If
they say yes you need to encounter them twice more to affirm their intention. The spirit guide
that presents itself is specific to the person asking the question (you). It is a good idea to look into
the meaning of this spirit guide even if just within yourself. Here
we go...
The portal to the underworld felt a little cool and wet. As I landed below my spirit guide flew to
me and perched on my shoulder. I stood there for some time waiting for my path or route to
become clear. Suddenly the earth gave way and I dropped into a deep and narrow hole. The dirt
that had parted below me now fell all around me trapping me where I had landed. I felt a little
panicked but soon understood what was happening was not literal but instead was a metaphor for
Emma's situation—that she felt stuck, closed in upon. As soon as I had this realization the earth
released me and I was deposited onto an embankment which I slid down. As I reached the bottom
I looked all around me. A rolling meadow with a few trees stretched out in front of me. At my
feet a clear and inviting stream moved at a peaceful pace along the meadows edge.
As I looked down I noticed a frog on a rock next to the stream. I asked if he was there to answer
Emma’s question. He croaked “no” in reply. I decided to wade into the inviting water. I walked
upstream for a while then sank down into the water and began to swim; as I did I noticed several
silver fish moving along side of me. As I neared the stream's source I got out. The surroundings
had grown lusher; I noticed a path ahead and decided to walk along it.
As I walked the trees became more numerous. I could hear that the woods were alive with
animal activity but they remained hidden from view. Then up ahead I noticed a large brown mass
moving onto the path. It was a huge bear. I walked up to her and asked if she was there to
answer Emma’s question. She answered that she was and then rose up and left. I continued down
the path.
The woods were growing very dark and the dense vegetation was blocking out most of the
remaining sunlight. However, fireflies danced around me and offered a sort of luminescence. At
that moment I heard a rusting sound to my left, I looked over and saw the outline of the bear
standing behind a tree. She moved away from the trunk where I could see her in full. Again, I
asked if she was there to answer Emma’s question and again she said yes.
I continued deeper into the woods. Now it had grown very dark, the sun had set. But before the
night could envelop my surroundings the moon began to rise. It was full and provided a beautiful
glow you only see on white nights in the winter. As I moved forward I saw a clearing. There
were several boulders situated in a circle. I moved to the middle of this enclosure and waited.
Sitting there I noticed the bear emerging once more from the forest’s edge. She walked towards
the stone circle and took a seat on one of the boulders. I asked her for a final time if she was there
to answer Emma’s question and she said yes for a third time.
As she answered yes several other bears (about 15 or so) came out of the darkness and took their
places on the stones as if on cue. They were very still. I waited for a moment then asked, “Why
is Grayson (Emma's son) acting out and how can she help him?” The bears began speaking to each
other all at once. I could not understand what was being said but I knew they would tell me what
I needed to know.
After a few minutes they fell silent. The bear I had spoken with earlier moved off of the stone
where she sat and came towards me. As she neared, she placed her massive paws on my shoulder
as if to emphasize her point. She said the first thing I needed to relay was that Emma must not be
hard on, or harmful to herself in any way. As she said this I could feel her intense love for Emma.
She continued, saying that Emma must be kind and gentle to herself because to do otherwise was
to also be unkind and ungentle with Grayson.
The mother bear said that the reason Grayson was acting out was because he was deeply
disconnected. It appears as though he is seeking power but in truth he is trying to find a way to
connect. I was then shown an image of a red balloon with a long string attached to it. I was made
to understand that this was Grayson. She said that Grayson resides almost entirely in his head
which is represented by the balloon. This is why it is difficult for him to relate to others. The
small thin string is all that connects him to things outside of himself. It is all that grounds him to
the earth. Because of this he cannot understand the perspective, emotions, or motivations of
others because such a small part of him is available to access these things. She said this is why he
enjoys food as he does. It allows him to feel his body, to be in it instead of his head. It allows him
to ground but not in the way he really needs.
I asked how Emma could help him. They showed me a huge anchor at her center—meaning she
must ground herself. They said she must find a way to be —to be still within herself. Emma
needed to avoid the urge or perceived need to fill empty space with constant activity. She had to
anchor so as to teach her child to do the same. They said Emma was the one to help Grayson but
that she couldn't walk him where she herself was unwilling to go. Be still—be present they said,
if you can’t do this you become wind around his balloon and he swirls without direction in the
air…in life.
I asked if there was anything else. It was reiterated that she must love herself. To love yourself is
to love Grayson. A child learns to love through their mother. You gift him with love when you
gift yourself with love. Again, I felt their deep protectiveness of her and their profound concern
and caring. They told me that when she had an urge to do otherwise she needed to focus all of her
energy towards her heart and she would soften towards herself.
I thanked each of them and as I did so my spirit animal flew above the circle depositing a fish in
each bears lap as a gift (He’d collected these earlier in the stream). Then I returned as I’d come.
The bear accompanied me through the woods to the source of the stream where
we said goodbye. Then I returned to the portal's entrance.
